Wet season here in Rote is still in full swing a lot of rain and onshore winds and so far a reduction in quarantine days to three days for people with the booster shot. Though it is not official as yet there is word of possible end to mandatory quarantine and visa on arrival as early as April 2022. So let’s hope so and enjoy the rest of this month’s newsletter with more information about quarantine and useful links to keep updated of further changes.

Getting ready for the 2022 surf season

Gardens are looking fantastic and the bungalows are in progress of refreshing paint. Maintenance is full steam ahead but with just Jenet and I battling along it is a struggle to have them all ready by the beginning of April. The progress is rewarding and in hope of guests coming this year with all our staff back in full swing life here in Rote should be fantastic again.

The season is looking brighter than it has for along time. Covid restrictions are pretty relaxed here in Rote even though it still comes down to your own personnel common sense to deal with precautionary infection. Omicron variant is here in Indonesia like everywhere else in the world so with myself not being an expert on viral diseases maybe somebody can explain the benefits of quarantine coming into the country that has covid already throughout every region. February produced a couple of days of excellent surf conditions.

It wasn’t worth jumping on a plane and rushing here. We had four days of light offshore winds with a punchy swell that at its peak of six foot sets it was a long awaited delight. Both Boa and Nemberala reefs had epic waves and with around fifteen westerners who not all surf on the island everybody was stoked. The rest of February has been rain with consistent westerly onshore winds everyday. Staying a little bit back from the beach has been a pleasure as the exposure from people living on the beach has apparently difficult to live with. The yellow surf bus should be back in the water during March so hopefully I can catch some images of the latest surf conditions.
